Funny what the threat of no beer at 5th Street Cross will do. Nine cases? That'll last. Until next week, at least.

Our birthday boy, Miles Neyen, took pride in his guest starter status to get the night started. Mark my words: that boy is going to kick every one of your butts in a few years. And would take out half of you now, if it weren't for liability issues.

Taus' strategy of only riding his bike once a week--for cross--pays off as he dons the coveted maglia cinque with his 5th in GC. Perhaps now he'll quit spending so much time working on his stinkin' porch--who the hell needs a porch in the wintertime anyway?--and step it up to give the spectators reason to cheer. Admit it, Taus: You miss the taste of cognac, don't you?

Brad once again dominated the field. And showed incredible strength when it only took TWO girls to help him finish his cognac. The fact that Tracy suggested "wine" or "perhaps schnapps" as the winner's beverage makes a whole lot more sense now.

Not only was Jamie the distinguished wearer of the GC title, but he's also the sole 5th Street Crosser to speak Wofol. In a strange coincidence, it seems that Jaime and his girlfriend spent 2 years living in a mud hut in Senegal--where 5th Street cofounder Bill was last seen. A quick guide: if someone fast is coming behind you and yells "charmoin!", you should move to the left; if they yell "nayjoor!", move to the right. If you hear "rafet meego," pedal away. Fast.

The race of the night belonged to the Pryor/Yeager household, most notably during Race 2 when Pryor was sufficiently PBR'ed enough to keep up with his naturally fast wife. Starting the bell lap, the happy couple came through the chute together smiling like honeymooners. Just after the sandbox, Pryor goes for his power play, shifts into his hardest gear and turns the goat field into his own personal defillabrator. That kind of screaming hasn't been heard since Mel Gibson's disemberment in "Braveheart." Selene never looked back. Pryor--it should be noted--is no Mel Gibson.

Kuklis brought 5 gallons of cider, which we forgot about. (Bring your containers next week--it's coming back.) Keith brought hoagies, which probably explains Plunkett's PBR offering on the course during Race 1. Lisa brought birthday cake, which was unanimously voted "best post-ride food that's free." And Ray brought...well, Ray brought nothing except two DNFs.

Race 2: 15 PBRs up for grabs. The Fab 5 (Ryan, Kuklis, Pryor, Robi, Plunkett) line up, ready to chug. Geniuses that they are, one of them (or perhaps it was Miles) realizes, "hey, if this goes right, we can all get 3." Lap 2, Fab 5 comes in all smiles for their 2nd Peeber. Then...what's this?! Emily?! Emily going for a Peeber? Obviously no one told her about The Plan. Robi gives his all to beat Plunkett to the last can of nectar, only to get a taste of karma when his chugging ability is astoundingly slower than Plunkett's alcohol-induced riding.

Duane snagged the Fastest Slow Person by turning in his first-ever sub-10-minute lap (7:44) and beating his personal best finish by 8 minutes. What if it turns out that he really IS fast?

BTW, has anyone seen Inchworm?

Footnote: This week, the course and pre-race setup was ready earlier than ever in the history of 5th Street Cross. Special thanks to Animal, Brad, Brian and Plunkett for coming out at lunchtime to help replace a zillion feet of course tape that Ray shredded all to hell last week. And thanks for figuring out how to compensate for the broken stakes on the course. Who says Boy Scouts can't race bikes? And thanks for gathering sticks and prepping the fire, so we didn't have to endure James' lack of firebuilding finesse. And thanks for retrieving the trash and recycling bins from the end of the driveway, which Kuklis was shamed into dragging down on Tuesday night. The recycling bins--for those who are confused--are GRAY. They are not green and look like grass, nor are they black and look like asphalt, or brown and look like a workbench. And they're in the garage--the same garage you walk into for another beer. So use 'em.

Thursday Nov. 1, 2007 - Race #4

Bill went to Senegal...
...and all I got was a lousy 'cross race.

But before jetting off to the jungle for three weeks, we harnessed the genius of a guy who designs secret lasers for the government under a Class 1 Clearance Level 1, so we could more quickly figure out if JK is ahead of Mary. Thanks, Ken.

After missing last week's monsoon, the fair-weather wussies came back out to play as 36 of you lined up for the first race. Topher broke the curse of the maglia cinque by showing up. Then he rocked it by showing nearly everyone else up.

Scooter got wise and used his 44-second lantern rouge advantage to chug a PBR, thus ensuring he wouldn't get caught before the driveway. Then he DNF'd.

X2 used her "Selene-is-out-of-town" advantage to line up 2nd row. Then she DNF'd.

Swope showed up early, bragged about her win at Nittany Cross over the weekend. Then she DNF'd.

Duane complained about his headlight, borrowed a loaner. Then he DNF'd.

Ray got the crowd all excited for a showdown on Race 2 after Brad beat him by 2 seconds in the opener. Then he DNF'd.

Enough of the quitters...a lot of people did race. The report was that the course was no longer the consistency of last week's soup. It's now turned to peanut butter. Chunky.

Plunkett rocketed to the lead of the PBR honor. Ryan will never recover.

Brad kicked everyone's muddy butts, then snubbed his nose at the cognac. Pryor was kind enough to offer assistance.

Bowman admitted he just couldn't bring himself to elbow 15-year-old Joey who was evidently in Bowman's way. He did however, have no problem taking out Emily and her bike as she kindly stood beside the trail to let him pass.

Pete cheered to hear he'd won some schwag. And cheered louder when he heard it was for Fastest Slow Person. Which reminds me: Many of you should just stop your hopes of sandbagging. We can see right through it, and you'll never get Fastest Slow Person that way. Neither can you get it if you are just slow.

Remember last year when Lath screamed at the bell lap "Noooooo!, let me do more!" A far cry from the guy who showed up tonight and sat an inch from the finish and waited 5 minutes for the leaders to cross. Welcome back, Lath. We missed you.

The Indiana boys came to town, talked some big racing talk. Looked at the course, then made a lame excuse about running the NY City Marathon this weekend. Weak.

5th Street Cross reached a milestone tonight as we welcomed our 50th racer of the season. Next week, we'll celebrate with beer...if anyone brings any. Plunkett was seen shaking his head in dejected disbelief as he stood before the empty fridge an hour after Race 2. Oh--that's a hint, by the way.

Nice night.

Very crossy, wasn’t it?

Topher rocked the race — right up until the point where oh no he didn’t. Brad looked mean and shit. Selene outdrank Pryor — in speed if not in frequency. Your humble narrator became the first brave racer to quaff three Peebers in a single race — and also the first to fall victim to the new, stringent and cruel unempty-PBR sanction. Plunkett had six for the night — the man’s a warrior (if warriors belched smelly beer bubbles and got all sentimental over nothing).

But, really, one quote seems to sum it all up:

Thirty-eight idiots racing in my yard, a pile-up on the driveway, tape strewn to hell and back, the enigmatic race stylings of Duane, the mobile course barrier that was Action Howard lying all over the trail, and the highest-ever psi -- 100 -- raced at Fifth Street. What's not to love?

I'll tell you what. After professing his love for the Fifth Street Cross community and, in particular, the glory of the PBR shortcut, two-time winner Ryan takes a beery dump all over the maglia cinque by announcing in advance that he won't show up next week to claim the coveted prize. No M.C. hammer next week, folks -- blame Ryan. And after Pryor did it up proud this week by almost finishing close to being not too far behind his wife.

What else? We have a serious PBR sandbagging problem. Some of those cans are hitting the driveway with a thunk louder than Beth's head made when she endoed on the hill I rerouted to ensure no one would endo. New rule -- and you know how much I despise making rules: When you finish a Peeber, you gotta tip it over and let whatever's in there pour out. If it's too much, you have to finish another whole one.

Wait -- 100 psi? WTF? Mr. Costello clearly never sat down at some point and gave his daughter "the tire pressure talk" before she made such a mistake.
